Wodonga Library will relocate to High St during the redevelopment of the library-gallery building.
The library service will operate from 194 High St for the duration of the build, taking over the space being used by the council as a customer service centre while the main building is refurbished.
The library will extend into the old sports store as well allowing it room to include areas for part of the book collection and public computers.
Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said the library was a key service in the community, with more than 145,000 people visiting the space each year.
“Our library is so well-used by people from across our community,” Cr Speedie said.
“And it’s more than just books with people enjoying everything from storytime to Geek Week to author talks.
“The numbers are astounding with more than 179,000 book loans, more than 500 programs, and people taking up digital loans with more than 17,000 items borrowed.
“The library also provides a really important service for our community in providing public computer access with more than 17,000 sessions a year through this service.
“It’s important that we provide some continuity for our community who enjoy and need this service while this exciting new development takes place.”
Works continues on the detailed designs and final floor plans for the new library-gallery.
One of the features to be added to the new building’s main reception will be a visitor servicing point.
Tourism volunteers will be available to assist visitors to find information about local activities and attractions with the site complemented by the long-vehicle parking in Havelock and High streets.
“With the redevelopment of this precinct we expect to see more visitors using this precinct including more events in the refurbished courtyard,” Cr Speedie said.
“Our feasibility study projects an increase of 10,000 day and overnight visitors coming through the new space in the first year alone.
“The library already offers public computers people can use to book activities and accommodation or find out more and this development is the ideal opportunity to trial having a tourism ambassador there to assist people that visit the precinct.”
The library’s book collection totals more than 40,000 books and the temporary space will host part of this collection. The temporary collection will be based on popular choices and the availability of collections at other libraries. Part of the collection will be put in storage.
But avid readers will still have access to the more than 2.4 million books available through the Swift consortium.
Arts Space Wodonga will be running a series of outreach programs and alternative spaces during the build of the new library gallery.
